about the cat action trust

We are a small Scottish based branch of a national cat rescue organisation (see map below) who are concerned primarily with the welfare of feral cats and kittens.
f you need help outwith Lanarkshire then contact www.catactiontrust.org.uk  this is the main headquarters for The Original Cat Action Trust and they will endeavor to help. We aim to neuter feral cats and kittens and re-home feral cats and kittens which are deemed suitable to adapting to a domestic environment.

We also aim to help feral cats and kittens by promoting a neutering programme.

We help any feral cat/kittens in need.

The group is run by a small team of cat loving volunteers (foster mums) who are dedicated purely to the welfare of cats. This group was started in September 1999 to try to help the sheer volume of cats in need. The existing charities couldn't seem to be able to cope.

Since then we have we have cared for, neutered, treated and re-homed over 850 cats and kittens to domestic type family homes. In addition, we have also neutered and treated some 600 feral/farm cats returning them to their original site where possible. Or elsewhere to more suitable outside homes, if and when they become available.

Please contact us if:

  • You have information concerning feral cats in your area which need attention.
  • You wish to borrow equipment to catch an elusive feral cat for treatment/neutering.
  • You are looking to home a cat(s)/kitten(s).
  • You wish to re-home a cat(s) of your own or a stray cat.-whether themselves, pregnant or with kittens.
  • Or even the kittens themselves and we will neuter the mum cat for you.
  • You are interested in becoming a volunteer.

Volunteers

If you love cats and want to be of help to the charity then here are just some of the ways you could help:
Phone Line – The phone line is often the first point of contact people will have with the charity. We receive hundreds of calls every month and it can be quite time consuming and demanding for one person to constantly take the phone calls and deal with all the enquiries. If you were able to spare some time and help with taking phone calls even one day a week this is one way which you could help the charity.
Fundraising – We are always in need of funds. As we are a small branch of a charity and receive no funding. We require to fundraise to pay the vets bills and care for the cats. If you are quite an organised person maybe you could help arrange events such as fundraising days, bag-packing, sponsored walks etc. This takes up a lot of spare time, which the fosterers really don’t have. If you could spare some time to help organise events then give us a ring. We also have collection cans, which allow the general public to contribute to the care of our cats. If you have a few spare hours every few months maybe you could arrange to collect our (hopefully full) collection cans and replace them with empty ones.

Fostering - We currently only have three full-time fosterers within the branch. We have one part-time fosterer and one kitten fosterer. If you love cats then this could be the job for you. We provide a cat shelter and all food vets fees and expenses are paid for. The only thing you give is a little electricity and your time. Some of the cats that come into our care have been badly treated and it takes time and patience for them to trust people again.

If you may be interested in fostering then give us a ring and have a chat. It helps if you can drive or have someone who can provide transport to get the cats to the vets but this is not essential. You must have a garden to put the shelter in (and good neighbours). You must also be prepared to deal with worms and fleas etc when the cats come in initially. Unfortunately a lot of our cats do come with passengers so every cat is wormed and deflead on admission.

We also need people to provide either a secure shed or garage to provide shelter for feral cats awaiting the vets the next day and then overnight before being released. We provide all the equipment you just provide a little time, your nerves and your shed or garage. Full training and advice would be given on caring for the cats.

Home checking/Driving – We need drivers to ferry our cats back and forth to the vets, move cats between fosterers, pick up cats coming into care and do home checks. If you can spare a few hours a week and have access to a car maybe this could be the way you could help the branch.
Feral Cats – We routinely trap, neuter and return feral cats and farm cats. We need help to trap these cats and get them to the vets for neutering. If you could spare, a few hours every week. A lot of the cats tend to either go into the traps overnight or late in the evening so we need flexible people to help with this. You would initially go out with one of our more experienced trappers and then when you felt confident enough to deal with this you could carry this job out yourself. It helps if you are a driver or have access to a car and somewhere to store the cats overnight before taking them to the vet the next day.
Admin – Are you a whiz with figures or good with paperwork? Maybe you could help with this end of the work. Give us a ring if you think you could help; we have lots of jobs in this area that you could help with.

Website – We need volunteers to help keep our website up to date and answer emails and direct the enquiry to the appropriate person. We also need a computer whiz kid to keep our online ads up to date to ensure we receive calls from the public. We also need help with sending our fliers to local vets, pet shops etc to advertise the cats we have in our care. If you have a computer and access to the Internet with a printer etc and have a few hours every week to spare then get in touch. Expenses will be met.

Currently the volunteers we have do all of the above – it would be great if we have some other cat loving people to help spread the load. We can sometimes be over run with cats and the phones are constantly ringing with others needing help. It's worth it when you look into the eyes of the cats and you see how much they love the care and love that we provide.
It's worth it.
